VSO is the world’s leading independent international development organisation that works through volunteers to fight poverty in developing countries.

VSO’s high-impact approach involves bringing people together to share skills, build capabilities, promote international understanding and action, and change lives to make the world a fairer place for all.

Working through volunteers means that VSO has the advantage of being able to recruit specialists from around the world with the right skills to support the specific needs of its partners. In its education programmes for example, it works with experienced teachers, head teachers and education managers – amongst others – to strengthen education systems and improve the quality of teaching.

VSO Malawi education programme

In Malawi, one of the issues VSO is addressing is the quality of education children receive in schools. VSO knows that supporting teachers is key to improving the quality of education. If teachers do not have the right skills or support, and are not motivated in their work, then the quality of education that learners experience suffers. With the support of the David and Elaine Potter Foundation, VSO is implementing a Quality Teachers for All project that directly addresses this issue. By supporting the continuing professional development of Malawian teachers VSO is enhancing their skills and motivation, thereby improving the quality of education that pupils receive.
