Professor Robert Kleta, Potter Chair of Nephrology at University College London (UCL), studies the clinicical aspects and genetics of rare metabolic and kidney disorders. Trained as a paediatrician and physiologist in Germany and in metabolic medicine and in genetics in the USA he recently accepted the offer of a Chair in Nephrology at UCL.

‘London offers the unique opportunity to see patients of any age with difficult clinical problems in world class hospitals. Equally, UCL offers the possibility to collaborate with high profile scientists on any kind of problem. I am very grateful to the David and Elaine Potter Charitable Foundation for facilitating my move from the USA to London. The study of rare disorders offers tremendous insights into the function of our body relevant to all patients.’

In collaboration with colleagues from Great Ormond Street Hospital, Royal Free Hospital and with scientists from around the world his group just described a new disease (EAST syndrome) affecting multiple organ systems. These findings were just published in an article in the New England Journal of Medicine, the world’s most prestigious medical journal (7 May 2009).
