Over 300 million children around the world do not have access to education and are likely never to learn to read or write. With this in mind, Room to Read partners with local communities throughout the developing world to provide quality educational opportunities to children with the least access.

The charity was launched in Nepal in 2000, where Room to Read began bringing donated books to rural communities. Today, it is a global organisation that helps children gain access to education through a variety of programmes including building schools, establishing libraries, publishing books and providing education for girls.

Room to Read currently works in nine countries - Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zambia - and has plans to expand throughout Asia, Africa and beyond to bring improved educational opportunities and resources to children throughout the developing world.

It seeks to intervene early in the lives of children in the belief that education is a lifelong gift that empowers people to improve socioeconomic conditions for their families, communities, countries, and future generations. Through the opportunities that only an education can provide, Room to Read strives to break the cycle of poverty, one child at a time.

Since its inception in 2000, Room to Read has reached more than 3.1 million children by:

  • establishing over bilingual 7,000 libraries
  • publishing more than 325 new local language children's titles in 20 different languages, representing over 3 million books
  • providing holistic, long-term educational opportunities to over 6,800 girls and constructing over 750 schools.
