A strong civil society holds governments accountable, enhances democratic institutions and the quality of life of its citizens, helping to strengthen and sustain economic, civil and legal rights.
One of our most important aims as a foundation is to help to create societies - both locally and worldwide - that are driven by equality and fairness. The means by which we and others can foster civil society are varied. We support projects that give people opportunities to take part in and to shape society; which enable the most disadvantaged people to play a full role in developing a fair civil society; and which foster dialogue across national and cultural boundaries. We do this by investing in a diverse array of projects: supporting education with an emphasis on commitment to civil society at the University of Cape Town; by funding the Centre for Investigative Journalism in its training of investigative journalists and other independent journalism efforts; by funding Global Witness in its efforts to highlight corruption and misuse of natural resources and many others.
