The Canon Collins Trust is based in southern Africa, where it supports education programmes which enable people to transform their region. It does this through a number of projects:
Merrian Women’s Club This Zambian organisation acts as a forum for rural women and advocates gender equality. The Foundation sponsored three university students and provided text books and revision kits for an ACCA student. All are from extremely disadvantaged rural backgrounds and would not have been able to benefit from tertiary education without the grants.
Farm Orphan Support Trust (FOST) FOST gives orphaned and other vulnerable children in Zimbabwe access to education. In the current political and economic environment in Zimbabwe, the Foundation’s grants are ever more essential. In one year the Foundation’s grant enabled 360 primary and 75 secondary pupils to continue their schooling, and trained four teachers to provide emotional support in the absence of parents.
South African Scholarships The Trust has an extensive grant scheme to enable scholars to study in South Africa, gaining skills which will be vital for their countries’ development.
The Foundation’s grant paid for eight scholars, among them Limpho Letsela. Though Ms Letsela’s mother was a housemaid and her father a subsistence farmer, she studied to become a biology teacher. Her passion for the environment then drove her to become a researcher on the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, achieve a Masters, and to use her skills working on sustainable development. The Foundation is funding her PhD in environmental management, which will equip her to manage the region’s precious water resources, pass on her skills and knowledge, and save lives and the environment.
Giyani Science Centre This centre provides low cost, high quality maths and science education, reaching tens of thousands of students in Limpopo province, one of the most deprived areas in South Africa. Many students visit the centre itself, and others are visited in their remote schools by the mobile laboratory. The centre’s flexible and imaginative approach has made it an invaluable resource in the region
